Have you ever noticed that there are times of the year when your hair falls out more noticeably? No, it's not a coincidence and it doesn't just happen to you. In spring and autumn, your hair prepares for the new season with a cellular renewal that also leads to a few more hairs found on pillows and brushes.
The natural cycle of hair
We all lose hair every day, between 50 and 100 a day. This is a completely normal cellular turnover that follows the natural life cycle of our hair. But how does this cycle work? It can be summarized as birth, growth and fall , and more specifically the 3 phases of hair development are divided into anagen, catagen and telogen. Anagen is the growth phase, which in women lasts between 3 and 7 years . This is the phase in which the hair is formed in its entire structure. The catagen phase instead lasts 2-3 weeks, it is the moment in which the vital functions stop and the hair prepares to fall. The last phase, telogen, lasts 2-3 months and is the moment in which the hair is ready to fall . All it takes is a light brushing or a little friction against the pillow and the hair will give way to a new one that will thus begin the cycle again. Since this resting phase occurs every 3 months, this is why we notice a more copious fall coinciding with the change of seasons.
Seasonal fall, why?
As the seasons change, we said that hair loss can be more significant , this is because your hair reacts to external stimuli and signals from the nature that surrounds us. During the summer, for example, hair weakens due to exposure to the sun, salt and chlorine from the pool. All these factors tend to weaken the hair, which becomes weak and falls out more easily. In spring, however, some hormones sensitive to changes in light tend to synchronize the hair's life cycle, leading to significant but temporary hair loss. Cutting your hair will not make it stronger , contrary to what is said, rather take a supplement that helps your hair in this process of natural evolution.
However, if this heavy hair loss continues for more than 2 months, it is time to investigate further. Remember that your hair is a mirror of your health and could be a warning sign of a hormonal imbalance, a lack of vitamins and nutrients, or an incorrect diet.
To protect your hair from the dryer and avoid weakening it, always remember to use a heat protectant before drying . Another enemy of our hair's health is smoking, which together with alcohol contributes to weakening your hair. Alcohol in fact damages the blood vessels that nourish the hair bulb, while smoking prevents the absorption of mineral salts and vitamins essential for the skin.
